Proving the real-world commercial value of wind-assisted propulsion will be purpose of one key-note speech at the 47th Propulsion & Future Fuels Conference this December.

Speaking at the Hamburg conference – 8-10 December – Will Hopes, a Performance & Simulation Engineer at BAR Technologies, will highlight how the company’s WindWings® installations can deliver transparent and comparable data providing real-world insight into system performance at sea.

Using embedded fibre-optic strain gauges, the system provides continuous measurement of aerodynamic thrust on wind-assisted propulsion systems, in turn enabling robust, comparable performance comparisons.

As Will’s paper states: “As the shipping industry accelerates toward decarbonisation, a critical gap remains between deploying new propulsion technologies and proving their real-world value. For shipowners, charterers and financiers, the question is no longer what could work, but what can be trusted to deliver measurable, bankable savings at scale.”

Will’s work with BAR sits at the intersection of simulation, real-world data and commercial application, helping to define how wind propulsion performance is measured, validated and understood across the industry. It extends beyond technical validation to the role of data in supporting commercial decision-making, helping reduce uncertainty and strengthening the investment case for clean propulsion technologies.

He will speak as part of the Propulsion & Future Fuels Conference session entitled ‘Measuring wind propulsion performance with confidence; accelerating the transition to a decarbonised fleet’.

Will’s experience includes analysing live vessel data from installations, including Berge Olympus the world’s most powerful sailing cargo ship, bridging the gap between theoretical prediction and measurable performance at sea.

The full provisional programme will be released shortly.
