Hyundai Heavy Industries’ (HHI) Ballast Water Treatment System (BWTS), HiBallast, has received type approval from DNV GL.

HHI announced it was the fourth BWTS manufacturer to receive a TA that meets the higher D2 ballast water discharge standard that will come into force for BWTS installations after 20 October 2020.

HiBallast successfully received the US Coastguard (USCG) Type Approval (TA) on 26 October 2018. It submitted its application in May 2018. HHI says it believes the type approvals of HiBallast will attract more orders from ships looking to retrofit BWTS.

The electrolysis-based system treats ballast water by filtering and sterilising bacteria, local plankton, mud and sand. It also sterilises 8,000m³ of seawater per hour with low power consumption.
