Oil analysis for electric ship machinery

Spectro, a UK-based independent laboratory providing oil condition monitoring services, has announced a contract for the provision of analysis services for ABB’s marine electric power and propulsion systems.

The co-operation between the two companies will enable ABB to provide oil analysis services to vessels that use any of the range of ABB electric power and propulsion systems. Spectro will provide these services, through its Spectro UK or Jet-Care USA laboratories, enabling ABB to rigorously monitor its various shipboard machinery from larger systems to individual equipment.

Spectro claims that its oil analysis services provide an important component for preventive monitoring and will enable ABB and its customers to better understand the health of the equipment and condition of the oil, as well as bringing optimal operation and maintenance performance. The data generated can anticipate equipment faults through analysis trending techniques and, according to Spectro, will ultimately deliver a more effective way to manage operational costs.

“Our global marine services organisation is committed to providing specialised service and support as an essential part of the solution we offer our customers” said Marko Kinnunen, development manager, ABB Marine. “Providing an analysis service is part of that support; ensuring each customer has assured high performance and reliability for its vessels.”

Trevor Jackson, marine business development manager, based at the Spectro head office, said “Spectro is very pleased to have this opportunity to work with ABB Marine. From the start of negotiations to the signing of the contract, ABB was very clear on the quality and standard of service required, as well as the need for fast turnaround times in reporting results. We are dedicated to ensuring that our laboratories maintain exacting high standards and the contract will therefore provide a comprehensive suite of tests all of which comply with our existing ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation with UKAS.”
