Landmark Italian LNG RoPax fitted with MAN Cryo FGSS
The first RoPax vessel in the Mediterranean to operate on liquefied natural gas (LNG) has entered service, serving a route between the Sicilian city of Messina and the Italian mainland. The double-ended RoPax ferry, 'Elio', was fitted with a marine LNG fuel-gas supply system (FGSS) installed by MAN Cryo, MAN Energy Solutions’ marine LNG fuel-gas-system manufacturer.
Elio is a double-ended RoPax ferry, designed by LMG Marin, for Italian shipowner, Caronte & Tourist. The RoPax is 133-metres long and 21.5-metres wide and will have a capacity of up to 290 cars on two vehicle decks, and 1,500 passengers with a service speed of 18.5 knots.
The vessel features three dual-fuel propulsion engines, and includes a MAN Cryo fuel-gas supply system. The system was installed by MAN Cryo aboard the Elio at the Sefine Shipyard in Yalova, Turkey. The FGSS included a 150m3 capacity type C containment tank, as well as a TCS with airlock, valves, piping and vaporisation equipment. The installation also covered a bunkering station, a heat-exchanger unit, freestanding control and an emergency shut-down system.
