Aeolus plans Jones Act wind farm fleet
Aeolus Energy, a US provider of technical services to renewable energy utilities, has appointed Ulstein to design the first Jones Act service operations vessel (SOV).
The contract marks Aeolus initial investment towards a fleet of vessels including cable ships, crew transfer vessels and hotel ships, all to be constructed by US shipyards. For Ulstein, the deal heralds its debut in the US offshore wind market and its fifth windfarm vessel contract so far this year.
The project will involve customizing Ulstein’s SX195 design to optimise the new walk-to-work vessel for operations in US offshore wind farms. It will include Ulstein’s proprietary X-bow and X-stern hull shape features.
“The choice of Ulstein has been based on their market leadership and proven track record in designing and constructing offshore wind vessels,” said Elia Golfin, CEO, Aeolus Energy. “Together with Ulstein we will develop a modern fleet, boost the American shipbuilding industry and push the envelope in the offshore wind industry where Jones Act-compliant vessels are concerned.”
Tore Ulstein, deputy CEO, Ulstein, added: “With our track record in SOV and offshore vessel designs, we are committed to supporting Aeolus in realising their offshore wind ambitions and developing their fleet portfolio. Using our experiences in supporting yards worldwide to construct our offshore vessel designs, it is with great enthusiasm that we now start on this exciting journey in the US.”
