Brodosplit delivers its most expensive vessel to date
In late 2011 Brodosplit shipyard in Split, Croatia, handed over the most expensive (at a cost exceeding $150 million) and one of the most complex newbuildings in the shipyard’s history to its owner, the French shipping/logistic company SNC Navale STEF-TFE.
The 42,180gt passenger ro-ro cargo ferry Piana was, according to the shipbuilder, constructed without any state subsidies and building began in 2009. The newbuilding is the flagship of the Marseille-based Compagnie Méridionale de Navigation (CMN) and operates the night service between Marseille and Bastia in Corsica.
Piana has a passenger capacity of 750, accommodated in 200 cabins of which 150 are of the four-berth type while the remainder feature twin beds. There are also 50 Pullman style reclining seats. Passenger facilities include a 400-seat self-service restaurant, two bars of which one opens onto the after deck, a 100-seat cinema, a meeting room for up to 50 persons and a car deck reserved exclusively for passenger cars. This is the first CMN vessel to offer this level of accommodation to its passengers.
Measuring 180m long and 30.50m wide, the 11,300dwt 12-deck ferry has 2,500 lane-metres for 180 commercial vehicles, in addition to garage space for 200 cars. The vessel is able to ship trucks carrying hazardous cargoes. There is a helipad on the top deck.
The newbuilding is equipped with a twin-screw propulsion plant comprising four 9,600kW Wärtsilä 8L46FM-CR medium-speed four-stroke diesel engines. With a total power output of 38,400kW, the two CP propellers can be powered up for a maximum speed of 24 knots although a service speed of 21 knots at sea state 5 will be the norm. To aid manoeuvrability in port, the vessel is fitted with two bow thrusters enabling her to operate in crosswinds of up to 40 knots. A pair of stabilisers will give passengers a more comfortable ride.
SAM Electronics supplied the workstations for the integrated bridge system displays for radar, ECDIS and conning. The installation included vessel control stations, a wide-screen display for radar and ECDIS, overhead displays and a bridge navigational watch alarm system. SAM also supplied the radar antennas. Zenitel Marine provided the ferry’s internal IP intercom system.
Classed by BV, the newbuilding meets the SOLAS 2009 regulations and complies with the stability requirements laid down in the Stockholm Agreement. In design the Piana closely resembles SNCM’s 35,760gt Pascal Paoli built in 2003. Although originally scheduled for delivery in June last year, the shipbuilder encountered a lot of issues with suppliers creating extra delays on almost every task concerning the ferry’s interior resulting in the ship being delivered six months late.
