Wind propulsion breakthrough for tankers

BAR Technologies’ WindWings propulsion system is to be installed on two newbuild LR2 dual-fuel tankers, marking one of the first large-scale wind propulsion deployments for this vessel class

The 250-metre vessels, designed by SDARI and built by Xiamen Shipbuilding Industry, will each feature two 37.5m WindWings. Steel cutting is set for November 2025, with delivery expected in early 2027.

According to BAR, the WindWings will cut daily fuel use by 3 tonnes, saving about 2,300 tonnes of CO₂ per year per ship.
