Using an abundant, if toxic, resource to power the maritime fleet. A mature future fuel already in use - but will it become dominant? LNG is currently the most popular lower carbon fuel, but with bio and e-LNG it could move beyond its current transition fuel status supported by extensive existing infrastructure. Numerous NGOs protested against the IMO earlier this year putting biofuels in its Global Fuel Standard, but the “fuel versus food” debate seems to have been solved by deriving fuels from waste. DNV and RSI release study on decarbonising the short sea dry bulk fleet
As the maritime industry wrestles with the practicalities of decarbonisation, a new study by the Responsible Shipping Initiative (RSI) and DNV has cast a sharp light on the challenges facing Europe’s short sea dry bulk sector.
Backed by the Swedish Transport Administration, the report – Decarbonisation of the short sea dry bulk fleet – shows that while Swedish cargo owners are committed to lower-emission transport, progress is being obstructed by a regulatory and investment vacuum for smaller vessels.
