Nations unprepared for IMO rules

A chemical aditive used to reduce particulate emissions, among other things, is being blamed for sea pollution

A new study has warned that no major maritime nation is fully prepared for tightening decarbonisation rules at the International Maritime Organization, highlighting risks even among the world’s leading shipping economies

The report by the UCL Energy Institute Shipping and Oceans Research Group is the first to systematically compare how 10 major shipping nations align with the IMO’s 2023 greenhouse gas strategy. It finds that differences in policy alignment, fuel strategies and industrial readiness could reshape competitive dynamics across the sector.
