Using an abundant, if toxic, resource to power the maritime fleet. A mature future fuel already in use - but will it become dominant? LNG is currently the most popular lower carbon fuel, but with bio and e-LNG it could move beyond its current transition fuel status supported by extensive existing infrastructure. Numerous NGOs protested against the IMO earlier this year putting biofuels in its Global Fuel Standard, but the “fuel versus food” debate seems to have been solved by deriving fuels from waste. Propulsion & Future Fuels Conference 2025

Elcome secures major retrofit deal
Elcome International has inked a landmark deal with a Middle East-based shipowner to retrofit boiler control systems on ten crude tankers and product carriers
The agreement is one of Elcome’s most extensive retrofit programmes to date, and involves replacing outdated Alfa Laval Mission/ALTS boiler control systems, originally installed in 2012 with UNISAB II controllers, with Elcome’s modern ELSYS PLC-based systems.
The upgrades include new human-machine interfaces, SCADA integration and a burner management system, along with secure remote connectivity for real-time diagnostics and support.
