The Energy Technologies Institute (ETI) has launched a tender for a partner to manage procurement and manufacture of a waste heat recovery system delivering fuel efficiencies of at least 8%, and to demonstrate the technology on a sea-going vessel.
The UK public-private partnership, whose members include Rolls-Royce, Caterpillar, Shell and the UK innovation agency Innovate UK, has asked for proposals by 31 May, with notification of intention to submit by 15 April. The proposed technology should be capable of being deployed on a range of marine vessels, including chemical tankers, general cargo vessels, container feeders, offshore support vessels and roll on roll off passenger ships.
Paul Trinick, heavy duty vehicle marine waste heat recovery system project manager, said: “We have identified improved waste heat recovery systems as one way of reducing the emissions and increasing the efficiency of shipping. We are keen to work with organisations who will be able to demonstrate the commercial viability of the waste heat recovery system.”
The project is one of a number currently being commissioned by the ETI in order to reduce emissions and increase efficiency of shipping. As reported, a further RFP has also been issued to design and demonstrate a commercially viable high efficiency propulsion system for ships. The request for proposals will close on 3 June 2016, notification of intention to submit a proposal by 22 April.
