Jan Arne Opedal will join the wind session at the Propulsion and Future Fuels conference with some exciting updates on the latest progress being made by the Odfjell Group in wind propulsion.

Jan Opedal

At the recent 20th Intersessional Working Group on Greenhouse Gases (ISWG-GHG 20) Odfjell’s Vice President, Technology, Erik Hjortland presented a compelling case for practical and scalable decarbonization in deep-sea shipping with one of his key messages to the IMO being “Wind power must be properly rewarded in the regulations—on equal terms as net-zero or near-zero fuels,”

He was referencing the wind-assisted propulsion system on Odfjell’s chemical tanker, Bow Olympus, which reduced fuel consumption by up to 40% on parts of a transatlantic voyage earlier this year.

Jan Arne Opedal will be covering this and other developments at Odfjell. Jan is currently Project Manager at Odfjell Management AS, where he leads technical modifications and decarbonisation initiatives for the global fleet, including the deployment of innovative technologies like wind-assisted propulsion and air lubrication. He has over 20 years’ experience in the maritime Industry. He holds a master’s degree from NTNU and officer training from the Royal Norwegian Navy.

Jan was previously Vice President for Engineering, Technology & Development at TTS Offshore Solutions AS (now MacGregor Norway AS), managing R&D, product development, and multi-disciplinary engineering team.

The Propulsion and Future Fuels conference takes place in less than a month, from 25-27 November in Hamburg.
