Maersk takes delivery of first methanol-fuelled boxship

UAE increases hydrogen ambitions in revised Energy Strategy
The United Arab Emirates (UAE) released a revised Energy Strategy at the beginning of July, earmarking investments of up to US$54 billion into the country’s renewables sector by 2030. Among the projects, the UAE announced that Masdar (the Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company) plans to increase green hydrogen production to 1.0 million tonnes per year by 2030, and that the state plans to develop two hydrogen production hubs by 2030.

SHI lands 16 x MeOH-fuelled 16,000 teu order from Evergreen
Evergreen Shipping’s subsidiary Evergreen Marine (Asia) has placed an order with Samsung Heavy Industries for 16 x 16,000 teu container vessel newbuildings, and a separate order for 8 x 16,000 teu with Japan’s Nihon Shipyard, according to an announcement at its shareholder meeting on 11 July. The vessels will be equipped with dual-fuel engines capable of operating on methanol.

Mitsui Augments Engine Production Range
Ranked among the world’s most prolific manufacturers of large marine engines, Mitsui E&S (MES) produced 136 two-stroke units totalling 2.83m bhp (2.11m kW) under its MAN licence in the past financial year. Affirming market recovery and the resilience of Japanese shipbuilders, the projected output from the company’s Tamano complex for the current year ending 31 March 2024 is up at 2.90m bhp (2.16m kW), consisting of 143 units.

Hapag-Lloyd and Seaspan ink 15+45 MeOH retrofit deal
Seaspan Corporation (Seaspan), the containership owner and manager, in collaboration with Hapag-Lloyd, have signed a Conversion Commitment Agreement with MAN PrimeServ. The deal covers the retrofit of the main engines aboard 15 container vessels equipped with MAN B&W S90-type main engines to dual-fuel MAN B&W ME-LGIM types capable of operation on green methanol. The Agreement includes 45 optional engine retrofit solutions.

New Breed For Canadian Product Flows
Canadian operator Algoma Central Corporation has specified methanol-ready main engine power for two product tankers ordered in South Korea. The 37,000dwt ice-class newbuilds have been fixed on long-term charter to Irving Oil, and will trade out of the company’s Saint John refinery in New Brunswick, hauling cargoes to Atlantic Canada and US East Coast destinations.
