NEW SOLUTIONS ON ENGINES

Ø CSR Pack (patented) CEGIELSKI SERVICE RECOMMENDATION PACK

Improving the operation of piston-cylinder liner units

As a manufacturer service of vessel 2-stroke Diesel engines, we have the opportunity to observe the problems that occur in one of most important engine units - in the operation of piston-cylinder liner units.

Analyzing the reasons for the emergence of these problems, H.Cegielski-SERVICE (HCS) introduced modifications that not only virtually eliminated these problems, but additionally led to extend the TBO for these units up to 15000 hrs. Changes have been developed to increase the intensity of heat transfer from the walls of the cylinder liners and pistons. It resulted in a reduction of the working temperature of the associated working components. Moreover there was also improvement of tribological performance and lifetime of associated spares.

Our new solution has been implemented in close cooperation with the shipowners. CSR Pack has been patented under name: CEGIELSKI SERVICE RECOMMENDATION PACK

The most important modifications are as follows:

¨ Verification of the structure and material of the cylinder liners

¨ Intensification of heat transfer from the walls of the cylinder liners and piston upper parts,

¨ Implementation of special piston rings according to HCS solution

¨ Introduction of lubricating oil according to recommendation of HCS,

¨ Modification of air coolers' cooling mode, enabling more effective impact on the proper temperature for

the scavenge after air coolers.

These modifications result in reduction of cylinder oil combustion on the cylinder liner surface, which gives more effective lubrication and reduction of the tendency to adhesive wear.

The photo shows an example of piston rings after the implementation of CSR Pack, next to the letter of recommendation from one of the shipowners.

Ø SLOW STEAMING - CONTINUOUS LOW LOAD OPERATION OF THE MAIN ENGINE

To reduce exploitation costs of main propulsion engines, a growing number of owners operate them continuously at low power. This is possible because the engine power reduction of about 70% results in vessel speed decrease of only about 30%.

By executing ship propulsion with main engine type - 6RTA62U and applied power 20% CMCR, in relation to the average operation power, cost savings are about 5 600 tons of fuel / year (by ship exploitation around 5 000 hrs / year).

H.Cegielski-SERVICE developed its own solution of engine operation for Slow Steaming at 20-40% CMCR load.

The solution is based on the modification in:

- drive of auxiliary blowers scavenging air, improving the air supply to the air tank,

- atomizers for injectors, through the application of more efficient atomizers with more effective fuel spraying at

low loads.

Particularly good results are obtained on the engines which have already implemented CSR Pack.

Ø EIAPP PROCEDURE

EIAPP certification method (Engine International Air Pollution Prevention) prepared by H.Cegielski-SERVICE for engines produced in 1990-2000.

To carry out the certification of engines built in 1990-2000, according to the current legislation of MARPOL, some simplification of the already existing procedures is allowed. After meeting them and obtaining the approval of the Classification Society it is not necessary to carry out measurements of NOx control measures on board.

Such certification may be conducted by the respective engine manufacturers or licensors.

For engines manufactured between 1990-2000 H.Cegielski-SERVICE developed its own method of certification regarding EIAPP procedure. This method consists in the introduction of appropriate modifications to MEMBER ENGINE, which enables comparing NOx of that engine to PARENT ENGINE.

H.Cegielski-SERVICE carries out the necessary modifications on the vessels and the marks with required ID numbers.

Certification procedures carried out so far have allowed to make significant savings when compared to competitive solutions.

STRUCTURAL REPAIRS

For many years H.Cegielski-SERVICE specializes in repairs of cracks which occurred during the operation, in different elements of 2-stroke engine structure, regardless the engine manufacturer.

Such repairs guarantee trouble-free operation of the engine in the future.

For each crack case there is individual repair offer and specific technology. Technology is always approved before the repair by classification society supervising repairs on the vessel. The welding works on the vessel are carried out by highly qualified welders certified by classification societies.

The repairs executed by our company can be classified in three groups (including some examples of repairs carried out on board):

I. Welding repairs of engines bed plates.

Fractures occur most frequently in the casted girders and in transversal plates welded to the girders

II. Welding repairs of A-frame.

Fractures are most common in the welds of ring hubs, fixing the camshaft drive wheels; in the middle of transverse

plates; in metal plates of crosshead guide rails; in fuel pump supports.

III. Other structures in the engines,

These are cracks in the air receiver; exhaust gas receiver brackets; turbocharger brackets; etc.

H.Cegielski-SERVICE offers also all spare parts for H.CEGIELSKI-SULZER and H.CEGIELSKI-MAN DIESEL 2-stroke and 4-stroke engines, as well as for air compressors of H.CEGIELSKI-POZNAŃ S.A. production.
