The Motorship’s 44th Propulsion & Future Fuels conference proceedings give in-depth future fuel and retrofit considerations, with sessions including the Cost of Decarbonisation, Safety Challenges for New Technology and LNG Beyond Transition, and the current hot topic Carbon Capture.

Some of this year’s highlights included:

Cost of Decarbonisation & Who is going to pay - The keynote panel discussed the emerging regulatory framework in place to reach the maritime decarbonisation targets, and its impact on ship technology. The panel addressed that initially, with an introduction of carbon price on shipping arriving next year; EU Emissions Trading System, shipping, shipowners, regulators, and industry associations will pay the price of shipping.

Solutions for 2030 - Diving into the emerging regulatory framework, ABS and DNV ensured delegates in the room were aware of all opportunities and potential complications. Sharing examples of innovation laying outside of new fuels including a wind-assisted bulk carrier and a new propulsor.

Safety Challenges for New Technology - Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller Center for Zero Carbon Shipping’s, Head of Onboard Vessel Solutions, Claus Winter Graugaard, used ammonia as an example of the factors needed to develop a safety framework for onboard operation and bunkering.

Motorship Award contenders - Two-stroke efficiency, two-stroke retrofit, four-stroke methane abatement and novel propulsor concept presentations were delivered in order to secure the much-desired Award.

LNG Beyond Transition - Carnival Corporation’s, SVP Maritime Affairs, Tom Strang noted that 20% of Carnival’s ships by passenger capacity run on LNG. Their company are considering bio-methane, alongside other alternatives, to decarbonise their fleet.

Future fuels - On the second day of the conference delegates were able to learn more about ammonia, methanol, hydrogen, carbon capture, lubrication and retrofit.
