Wah Kwong Maritime Transport has taken a significant step in its digitalisation strategy with the delivery of its first SMART-enabled LR2 tanker, marking a new phase in fleet development.
The 114,000 dwt Frontier Venture, built at Hengli Shipyard and classed by Bureau Veritas, is the first in a new series of vessels designed with advanced ‘augmented ship’ capabilities. These integrate onboard digital systems with shore-based support, enabling real-time monitoring and decision-making.
The vessel has been awarded SMART (H1, M1, EnE3, MH3) notations, recognising enhanced machinery health monitoring and energy efficiency optimisation. It reflects a broader industry push toward data-driven operations as shipowners seek greater efficiency and reliability.
Hing Chao, chair of Wah Kwong Maritime Transport, said the delivery marks a key milestone in the company’s long-standing collaboration with BV. “The SMART notations awarded to our first LR2 mark a key milestone in our long-term partnership, ensuring that data-driven insights are effectively embedded in operations onboard and ashore,” he said.
The ‘augmented ship’ concept includes expert-in-the-loop services, allowing shore-based specialists to support crews with actionable insights, including early detection of machinery issues and optimisation of operating performance.
Alex Gregg-Smith highlighted the wider significance for the sector. “The maritime sector is undergoing profound transformation, in which digitalisation continues to play a central role. Building trust in new technologies is essential,” he said.
The delivery builds on earlier milestones, including the SMART-enabled bulk carrier Eastern Venture in 2023, and forms part of a wider programme covering multiple vessel types. Additional ships, including LNG carriers and bulkers, are scheduled for delivery through 2027 as Wah Kwong continues to expand its smart fleet.
