ABB has introduced a new propulsion concept called Dynafin™. The new propulsion concept is a cycloidal propeller with individually controlled blades. The operating principle allows the unit to utilize a trochoidal blade path, which is analogous to the movement of a whale tail. The new concept has the potential to reduce fuel consumption significantly.

Janne Pohjalainen, Global Product Line Manager for Dynafin™, ABB Marine & Ports, explained that the new propulsion concept was expected to lead to “a revolution in propulsion efficiency” in an interview with The Motorship.
