While nuclear power at sea has been limited to military vessels and a few Arctic icebreakers, it is re-emerging as a potential long-term solution for zero-emission shipping.

As a result, it will take its place at December’s Propulsion & Future Fuels Conference where its potential, alongside the many challenges to its implementation, will be examined.

Among those bringing their expertise to bear is Geir Terje Nevøy, a Senior Project Manager, Newbuilding and Technology at Wilhelmsen Ship Management. A professional engineer in the subsea oil & gas and maritime industry, Nevøy brings experience in marine engineering, manufacturing and testing, and EPC to the discussion.

The panel session, Nuclear at Sea: Powering the Future of Commercial Shipping? will explore reactor design considerations, the evolving regulatory landscape, and the operational realities of deploying nuclear-powered commercial vessels.

At a European level nuclear energy has been identified as a sustainable source of energy able to assist in meeting the zero-emission goal of the EU, and therefore is eligible for green sustainable financing. While it offers a pathway to the decarbonization of the sector, it also presents a series of challenges that will need to be addressed in relation to production, safety, security, training and liability and insurance.

Joining Nevøy in a wide-ranging conversation will be Lars Robert Pedersen, Deputy Secretary General of BIMCO, Jez Simms, Director Nuclear Technology at Lloyds Register who will deliver an Opening Keynote presentation, Thomas Beard, Clean Shipping Service Lead at BMT, and Derek Munro, Project Lead with NOXFREE.

The 47th Propulsion & Future Fuels Conference will be held 8-10 December in Hamburg, Germany.
