Stolt Tankers is conducting a long-term trial into the effects of the application of an innovative graphene-based marine coating to the hull of one of its tankers. The hard foul release hull coating was applied to the 30,000dwt Stolt Lotus in early November 2023 during a five-day drydock in China.

This is the first such application of the X-GIT FUEL graphene technology, developed by Canada’s Graphite Innovation & Technologies (GIT) Coatings, to a vessel’s hull. Stolt Tankers previously collaborated with GIT Coatings to apply the graphene coating to the propellors of more than 40 of its ships earlier in 2023.

Stolt Tankers has opted to apply an innovative graphene-based coating to the hull of one of its chemical tankers, the Stolt Lotus (pictured).

The company claims that the product inhibits biofouling and improves propulsion efficiency by creating an ultra-low friction surface without the use of biocides, silicon oils or toxic elements. The coating is expected to provide fuel savings of between 5-7%.

The sustainable hull coating is expected to last for approximately ten years, but the condition of the hull coating will be evaluated after five years to confirm if any maintenance is required.
