Norwegian project to develop ammonia reforming technology for NH3 carriers
Wärtsilä is participating in a Norwegian state-funded project to develop ammonia reforming technology for installation on board ammonia (NH3) carriers. The objective of the project is to enable ammonia to be converted back to hydrogen at the receiving destination, allowing ammonia carriers to convert (or catalytically reform) cargoes into hydrogen, acting as a floating receiving terminal capable of being relocated as needed, requiring minimal use of coastal land and a solution resulting in lower overall cost, improved safety and competitive hydrogen prices.

Dual-fuel VLCC Design Maintains Cargo Capacity
Deltamarin and GTT have received an Approval in Principle (AiP) from ClassNK for their LNG-fuelled 12,500cbm Very Large Crude Carrier (VLCC) design. The design retains the same cargo capacity as a standard VLCC owing to its use of membrane-type LNG fuel tanks in the design.

The DP-2 design also features an innovative propulsion system incorporating a twin-skeg design with two contra-rotating propellers to improve efficiency.

GCMD selects concept study for LCO2 offloading
The Global Centre for Maritime Decarbonisation (GCMD) has selected a proposal for a concept study on offloading liquefied CO2 (LCO2) captured onboard ships for further development from a shortlist of submissions from classification societies and engineering consultants. The winning proposal was submitted by Lloyd’s Register, supported by its partner Arup, in response to an Invitation-for-Proposal issued in December 2022.

Chengxi wins 84,000dwt multipurpose vessel series
Japan’s Kumiai Senpaku has awarded China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC) a contract for 10 x 84,500dwt multipurpose vessels, as well as a 17,000 dwt asphalt carrier. The orders will be built at Chengxi Shipbuilding, although no details about delivery dates were announced.

CMA CGM places USD3bn dual fuel container ships order
China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC) has received an order for 16 dual-fuel containerships from French-based liner operator, CMA CGM. The order includes 12 x 15,000 TEU containerships that will be capable of sailing on methanol, along with an order for 4 x 23,000 TEU containerships that will be equipped with dual fuel LNG engines.
