Wallenius Sol has begun bunkering its Enabler-class multi-fuel vessels with liquefied biogas (LBG) as part of a new supply agreement with Nordic energy company Gasum.

The first bunkering of the Baltic Enabler and Botnia Enabler took place in early October and is being hailed as a major milestone in the company’s climate roadmap.

“We aim to be the natural partner for sustainable sea logistics in the Gulf of Bothnia and across to the European continent,” said Rebecca Tagaeus, sustainability officer at Wallenius Sol.

“Switching to LBG for Baltic Enabler and Botnia Enabler is clear proof that our roadmap is delivering – and that we are investing in our customers’ climate goals.”

LBG, produced from organic waste streams, is chemically identical to liquefied natural gas, allowing it to be used directly in existing dual-fuel engines. This compatibility makes it an efficient and sustainable alternative to fossil fuels, offering a low-carbon solution without requiring technical modifications.

The LBG supplied by Gasum is certified under RED II and traceable via the ISCC system. It is derived from Nordic residual streams, avoiding any conflict with food production and helping customers reduce their Scope 3 emissions.
