At the heart of this work is Dr Markus Münz, Managing Director of VDMA Large Engines - CIMAC Germany, our co chairman of PFF this year, taking place in Hamburg from the 8th to the 10th of December 2026. Münz helping to connect engine manufacturers, researchers, and policymakers across Europe and beyond. His focus reflects a wider industry challenge: balancing innovation in alternative fuels with the practical realities of global shipping.
VDMA Large Engines represents manufacturers working across industrial and marine propulsion, supporting the evolution of internal combustion engines rather than their replacement. Through CIMAC Germany, this expertise is linked into an international technical network focused on emissions reduction, fuel flexibility, and engine performance.
A key theme across this work is the transition to alternative and synthetic fuels, alongside efficiency technologies and hybrid propulsion solutions. As Dr Münz highlights:
“Hydrogen, e-fuels, ammonia, methanol, CCS, wind-assisted and nuclear-powered technologies are shaping crucial decisions today. At the PFF Conference, experts share insights and hands-on experience to explore practical solutions driving the maritime industry forward.”
Together, VDMA and CIMAC are helping to shape a technology-open pathway for maritime decarbonisation—one that recognises there will be no single solution, but rather a mix of fuels, systems, and operational strategies.
As the industry moves from pilot projects to real-world deployment, their work continues to bridge the gap between innovation and implementation, ensuring propulsion technologies are both future-ready and commercially viable.
