Jimmy Lirvat, Head of Performance, GT Wings, will be speaking at the 2026 Propulsion and Future Fuels Conference, taking place in Hamburg from the 8th to the 10th of December. With a background in high-performance aerodynamic engineering, including Formula 1 and advanced CFD-led optimisation, he now leads on the modelling, optimisation and validation of wind-assisted propulsion systems.

As industry focus shifts from theoretical performance to proven operational outcomes, his presentation will examine the gap between predicted and actual fuel savings. It will explore how factors such as weather conditions, routing decisions, vessel behaviour and operational limits influence performance at sea.

The session will also address onboard and operational considerations, including crew confidence, system integration, automation and company risk appetite, all of which affect how consistently wind-assist systems are used.

Drawing on practical approaches to performance verification, Lirvat will outline how operators can better assess real-world impact, including the use of operational data analysis, voyage normalisation and utilisation tracking to distinguish between theoretical contribution and realised savings.
